1. General Disclaimer
WildDevon ("we", "us", "the site") is an independent information and travel guide. All content — including beach guides, walk descriptions, wild swimming information, surfing guides and camping advice — is provided for general informational purposes only.
While we take care to ensure information is accurate and up to date, we make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, reliability, suitability or availability of the information on this website. Conditions at outdoor locations change constantly. Information about tides, water quality, access routes, facilities, parking and safety conditions may become outdated at any time. Always verify conditions independently before undertaking any activity.
2. Outdoor Activities — Specific Risks
Wild Swimming
- Wild swimming in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, the sea and tidal pools carries serious risks including cold water shock, drowning, unseen currents, underwater hazards, contaminated water and rapidly changing conditions.
- Never swim alone. Always check water quality, river levels and weather forecasts before entering the water.
- The presence of a location on this website is not a recommendation that it is safe to swim at any particular time.
- Children must be actively supervised at all times near water.
Surfing & Watersports
- Surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding and other watersports carry risks including injury from boards, rocks and other water users, rip currents, submersion and cold water shock.
- Always use appropriate equipment, check surf conditions and wave heights before entering the water, and follow the advice of RNLI lifeguards where present.
- Beginners should take professional lessons from a qualified surf school before surfing independently.
Coastal & Moorland Walking
- Coastal paths, cliff edges and moorland walks carry risks including unstable ground, sudden cliff collapse, fast-changing weather, mist and disorientation, and remote locations with no mobile signal.
- Always carry an OS map or appropriate navigation device, wear suitable footwear, carry water and food, and tell someone your planned route and return time.
- Keep a safe distance from cliff edges at all times. Do not approach the cliff edge to take photographs.
- On Dartmoor, be aware of military firing ranges. Check range closure times at dartmoor.gov.uk before visiting remote areas.
Camping & Wild Camping
- Wild camping on Dartmoor is permitted under the Dartmoor Commons Act but campers must follow the Dartmoor Camping Code. Elsewhere in England, wild camping requires landowner permission.
- Open fires may be prohibited, especially during dry periods. Always check local fire restrictions. Never leave fires unattended.
- Campers are responsible for their own safety, including awareness of weather, wildlife and their equipment.
Rock Pooling & Beach Activities
- Be aware of incoming tides when rock pooling — always check tide times before visiting rocky shores and never allow the tide to cut off your return route.
- Wet rocks and seaweed are extremely slippery. Wear appropriate footwear and move carefully.
